Spot testing Google's material design

At the start of the year, I discovered the material design specifications. They are not just guidelines for Android Lollipop. They are a crash course in design fundamentals and theory. After all, the goal of material design is:

Create a visual language that synthesizes classic principles of good design with the innovation and possibility of technology and science.

Now, I haven’t read any Paul Rand, but I will bet my salary that someone writing these specifications at Google has (the design company HUGE contributed too). If you haven’t read through them, do so, before I show you how I did a quick and dirty redesign of a hobby project. Then I Pepsi Challenge the two to see which one tastes better to passersby.

So the web app I’m going to give the material design makeover to is this one: College Itinerary.

My first attempt at a material design mockup, with Illustrator:

I borrowed heavily from the Layout Templates provided in the Material Design resources section.

I like where this is going…
